Glastonbury Chic

The Glastonbury Festival has come and gone, and whether you’re a Mark Ronson fan or more of a Leonard Cohen girl, three stylish pieces were de rigueur for the weekend.
High-waisted Denim
Fashion-forward and still unexpected, high-waisted denim showed up in summer shorts.
Wellington Boots
Kate Moss led the pack, but every other practical-minded festival-goer had the same idea and embraced their waterproof Hunters and Tretorns.
Technicolor Ray-Bans
Quirky, statement colors in the classic Wayfarer shape, Ray-Bans (and look-alikes) were all over Worthy Farm.

Check out style.com for awesome photos of the weekend’s fashions – then put together your own mud-skipping ensemble at shopbop!

First Fashion: Our Faves from What’s New

In the interest of full disclosure, when it comes to fashion I pretty much never stray from the classic. But when a girl has options like this, why on earth would she?
I’ve had a minor (okay, major) obsession with Lauren Merkin handbags since I started working at shopbop three years ago, and this casual yet sophisticated clutch is fueling the flames. Lauren Merkin - Ava Textured Clutch
I love a slim jean, but I’ve never quite jumped on the skinny bandwagon. This pair lets me rock the sleek style, while the dark wash caters to my timeless inclination. GoldSign - Foxy Straight Leg Jean
When I’m feeling the need to branch out from my standard go-tos, Helmut Lang is my brand. In a light corduroy, this jacket is perfect for cool summer nights and not-quite-cold fall days. Helmut Lang - Shawl Collar Motorcycle Jacket

Monday à la Moss!

This installment of MALM finds our girl Kate at that Brit hipster-happening, the Glastonbury Music Festival. Pulled-together yet never precious, Kate’s utterly personal look feels perfectly in tune with her laid-back, music fest surroundings. (Not surprising, considering Kate was one of the foremost pioneers of the high/low, luxe groupie look.) But enough with the waxing rhapsodic for the moment, let’s get to the good part where I recreate Kate with stuff from shopbop.

Glastonbury saw Kate pairing her go-to grey skinnies (these are J Brand) with navy Hunter Wellies and a brilliantly unexpected silky top. (It’s not metallic, but methinks Moss would adore this Helmut Lang one just as much.) This functional-yet-fashionable Foley + Corinna bag looks a lot like the one she has over her shoulder, and this military-inspired Mike & Chris jacket is practical and adds just the right amount of edge. And of course, no Kate ensemble would be complete without a pendant and a couple of really cool rings. (Photo courtesy of Jezebel.)

First Fashion: Our Favorites from What's New

One of my favorite things about fashion is wading through the wide range of design inspiration.
Sunner’s brand of preppy cool has found the perfect medium in this ruffled corduroy dress. Now that I’m not in school anymore, something has to take the place of buying new #2 pencils!
Art deco always has that timeless, edgy quality, which is why I love the angular, exaggerated pleating on Kooba’s Tracy Bag.
The utilitarian-style key detail on these post earrings from Juicy are small enough to warrant a double-take, and quirky enough to make that double-take worth it. Maybe if I wear these they’ll keep me from locking my keys in the car. While it’s running. Again.

In the Glossies: shopbop in Star magazine

Star magazine recently featured some fabulous beach accessories, and shopbop pieces are smack in the middle of the profile. Rebel Yell’s Boat Neck minidress is the perfect beach cover-up and is versatile enough to be worn both on and off the boardwalk. And Vix’s Palmilla Kukui tote is a fetching combination of practicality and island cool. Star has shown off some great ideas for accessories, and you can find more inspiration – plus the perfect swimsuit – at shopbop.

Naughty or nice? Today I want styles with a little bit o’ both.
Just the retro-sexy, ladylike pair I’m in the mood for right now. These feel very Liz Taylor in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Hanky Panky, Signature Lace Ruched Boy Short
Like a sophisticated, uptown version of something Debbie Harry would’ve worn, circa 1979. Refined enough for work, the studs give these suede pumps a cool rocker attitude. Jean-Michel Cazabat Luxury Rebel, La Palma Tapered Toe Stud Pump
Hot in that insouciant, not-trying-too-hard way I’m obsessed with, this top has a great DIY feel without the time-consuming DIY part. Elizabeth and James, Scarf Tee

4 Questions for St. Kilda Designer Nora Kogan

What is the philosophy behind your line?
I just want to make jewelry that’s cool and interesting and that isn’t going to date. St. Kilda is sophisticated, subtle, and it’s meant to enhance the beauty and style of the woman wearing it. It’s not about wearing a big piece of jewelry to show off. It’s not about flashiness. It’s about seeing someone and thinking, “She looks cool.”

What inspires your designs?
Everything and anything. Ultimately, my imagination inspires my designs but it can start anywhere. Sometimes it’s seeing a stylish girl and imagining what kind of jewelry she would wear. Sometimes it’s just a feeling that I want to express. Sometimes the gemstones I choose dictate what I’m going to make. I take design cues from the shapes and colors of the stones.
Travel is an easy answer, but I was lucky enough to be exposed to beauty and art and culture at a young age. I got to travel to Moscow often and once to St. Petersburg with my mum just to visit the Hermitage! When my parents and I emigrated from Russia we spent two weeks in Vienna. Then we moved to Italy for a year and then to Australia. Growing up in St. Kilda in Melbourne was a true inspiration—a beautiful hodgepodge of design and style that shouldn’t work but does.

What is your best accessorizing advice?
Take it easy. The worst offense is looking like you’re trying too hard. I always like to look a bit disheveled, and always, the bigger the diamond, the lower the heel. That said, I feel naked without jewelry!

Do you follow Coco Chanel’s rule: “take one piece off before you leave the house”?
Always! Less is more, that’s my rule.

Summer is (officially) underway, and I’ve come to realize there are a few pieces out there that are must-haves for the season.
Lightweight Jersey
Casual, sexy, and ridiculously comfortable, jersey tops (like this one from 291) are perfect for the summer. Add a scoop back and a little tie-dye, and I’ve got the perfect top for catching cool breezes on a sweltering Saturday night.
Unique Footwear
Everyone and their sister is out flip-flopping in some sort of sandal, and the last thing I want is to saunter up to the bar, only to realize that every other girl lined up along the zinc is wearing some clone of the same strappy shoe. Can’t happen with this cool pair from Dolce Vita.
Effortless Dress
At shopbop we’ve been extolling the charms of the summer dress for weeks, and my love of its insta-chic properties and flattering silhouettes has not waned. This jersey number from Splendid is the epitome of simple style.

Rihanna, Where You At?

A select few celebrities can do no wrong style-wise for me, and Rihanna is right there at the top of that list. Doesn’t matter what it is, if she’s wearing it, I want it. The yellow dress she rocked at the BET Awards last night? Yes. Latex leggings? Love. Oversized hoops? Must. Have. Pleated, slouchy trousers with a white tank? Perfection.

Of course, seeing as I work at an online retailer, tracking down Rihanna-like items on our site could be considered research. (Purchasing said items? Now that’s a bit harder to rationalize.) Got a girl-crush on Rihanna? These three pieces pay tribute to her inimitable style.

Inspired by the beaut she wore to the BET Awards, but at a price that’s right for those of us without a recording contract. Alice + Olivia Double Strap Long Dress
Latex. Leggings. Need I say more? Kova & T Latex Leggings
Massive hoops up the style ante of any ensemble. These are delicate enough that they don’t weigh down my earlobes. Melissa Joy Manning Extra Large Hoops

Rachel Roy's Pre-Fall Collection

When talking to style.com about what inspired her fall collection, Rachel Roy said she was "interested in the intersection between Native American and Colonial styles, but brought up-to-date for the women of today." An intriguing proposition to be certain, and one Roy pulls off with characteristic panache. Witness a classic sheath with tiers of fringe, a sophisticated silk blouse embellished with antique beading, and a slouchy-yet-refined trouser. Shop these standout styles and the rest of Rachel Roy's new pre-fall collection, right here in the Designer Boutique.
